Story
If you knew how much I fear heights, then you'd know I'm not doing this just for fun! I have been roped (excuse the pun) into this abseiling event to show my support to the 14 others who have very kindly chosen to fundraise for Thomley Activity Centre by abseiling off the roof of the terrifyingly tall John Radcliffe Hospital at 1pm on Sunday 23rd June. On all accounts, getting to the roof is as scary as going over the edge!
Having been involved in Thomley Activity Centre for 9 years now, I can vouch that every penny raised is used to offer disabled children and their families the opportunity to have fun, relax and be themselves, as highlighted by the following comment...
"Thomley is the only place in my son's life where he can truly be who he is, outside of his own home. All other social settings necessitate some sort of fitting in, although his disability does not allow him to understand this. So, the shepherding required by his carers is constant and relentless. Thomley allows him to be free, to make his own decisions, to choose whatever it is he would like to do. He is extremely comfortable and at ease when he visits, with no screaming or negative behaviours. It is almost like he lets out a big sigh of relief when we get through those gates".
So, I hope that you will help me over the edge by sponsoring me generously.... I need every bit of encouragement possible to convince me it's a good idea!!
Thanks
Claire Acworth (Director of Thomley Activity Centre)
