Claire's 1 in 10 Challenge in Endometriosis Awareness Month

1 in 10 Challenge · 21 March 2021
Each year, in March, Endometriosis U.K. have an awareness month. This usually ends with a mass run/walk in London. This year is obviously different and so the charity has set a 1 in 10 challenge to represent the 1 in 10 women in the U.K. who suffer. People are walking 1km a day for 10 days, baking 10 cakes, running 10km etc. My 1 in 10 challenge is unique to me and it is....to sleep!!
I have suffered with endometriosis for more than 25 years (15 years since diagnosis). Like so many of the other 1 in 10 women who suffer I have had multiple surgeries, endless types of hormone treatment, years of anemia, undertaken fertility treatment and paced many miles of carpet holding an uncovered hot water bottle counting the minutes for when I can take more prescription painkillers.
However, my current greatest challege is not just daily pain but coping with the utter exhaustion and mental health conseqences of years of dealing with this vile disease. Therefore the 1 in 10 challenge I have set for myself is to be in bed ready to sleep by 10pm for 10 nights in a row. Although I know there is no cure, my focus is on helping my body and mind rest and have a chance of healing. To those of you who know me well, with my "night owl" nickname, will recognise that this is no mean feat for me.
