Story

Claire started her fight with cancer in September 2018 after already having to fight in 2011. Many people say that they are sorry that Claire lost her fight to cancer but she didn’t lose to cancer, she kicked cancer so hard. Claire’s family and friends were with Claire for the entire journey and this love and support made Claire stronger and even more determined to live for as long as possible.

Claire defied doctors over and over, booked holidays for months in advance, saw more Christmases than anticipated and lived every day as it came. Many memories were made along the way.
Unfortunately, Claire passed away on May 4th with loved ones by her side and in the thoughts of all that knew her.

What is it that you remember most about Claire? I’ll always remember her laugh, larger than life itself smile and how a hug made things so much better. Take the time to look at her photo’s you may have of her and you’ll see what I mean.

Claire has requested that friends and family do not send flowers to her funeral but instead donate to the St Helena’s Hospice. For those concerned, Claire will have flowers but will be provided by family.

Almost immediately after Claire’s diagnosis we had a visit from the hospice, a lovely lady named Emma. Emma provided emotional support, assistance with getting further support and all the information that Claire and the family needed along the way. Claire confided in Emma and without her Claire would tell you herself, she doesn’t know how she would have coped. Emma would visit Claire frequently, provide a shoulder to cry on, somebody to vent to and to help put things as right as they could be. Later on, in 2019 Josh took over from Emma and was just as brilliant too, he provided just as much emotional support, practical support and everything that Claire and the family needed.

Throughout the journey the Hospice provided a place where Claire could go to get help with pain management, advice from medical teams and more. During overnight stays the team of nurses, doctors, chefs and cleaners could make Claire smile, laugh and cry at the same time. They even provided hot chocolate on demand as well as all the ice cream Claire could manage. Claire loved the entire team.

Occupational therapy visited us to help adjust the home to make Claire’s life as easy as possible, providing us with free access and fitting to all the equipment that was needed. The occupational therapy team always put a smile on Claire’s face. Without the team visiting day to day living would have been a lot more difficult.

The Hospice provided complementary therapy for Claire, Claire would often go to the Hospice with her Mum and get a massage. Claire attended the gardening therapy and loved it, often bringing her creations home. Claire even spoke highly of the couple that would transport her to and from the hospice and asked about them when she visited the hospice.

The child support services team have also provided an excellent service and still do.

Claire passed away in a calm and familiar environment at the hospice and even through the toughest of times the team couldn’t have provided a better service and support. I’ll certainly never forget how much of a difference they made to Claire’s life and without them I don’t know how we would have coped. Somehow, the team at the Hospice have managed to make the most difficult times somewhat ‘easier’. They will never be forgotten.

Please consider donating to the Hospice and please consider donating in the future too, please do visit the website too – there is information relating to the chapel, the memory tree and much more.

Claire may have sadly passed away but she has inspired so many people and will live on in our hearts and memories forever.
You’ll always be missed and never forgotten, that’s a promise x
