Hey all I'm doing the London Marathon on 24 April, to raise money for ACLT!!!

ACLT (African Caribbean Leukaemia Trust) raises awareness about leukaemia and related blood cancers and disorders and encourages individuals to become potential lifesavers by joining the blood, bone marrow and organ donor registers. The charity is particularly focussed on finding lifesavers from Black, Asian, Mixed Race and other minority ethnic communities in the UK as they are severely under-represented on all UK donor registers.


The charity was co-founded in 1996 by Beverley De-Gale and Orin Lewis, parents of former leukaemia patient Daniel De-Gale. For over 17 years ACLT has been raising awareness about bone marrow donation and has helped grow the  BME bone marrow register.

ACLT supports patients and families by offering practical and emotional assistance, delivers patient donor appeals in the media and goes out in to the community to register more potential lifesaving donors.

However, there is still much work to be done. Of the 800,000 potential donors on the UK bone marrow registers less than 1% is from Black, Asian, Mixed Race and other minority ethnic communities. The odds for BME patients finding a bone marrow donor are still 1 in 100,000 compared to 1 in 4 for White Northern European patients.

As a small charity, ACLT relies on the generosity of the general public to ensure their financial stability and to fund projects designed to motivate many more people to join the bone marrow, blood and organ donor registers.
