I have been doing this boxing thing in a low-key way for a while now, and now a moment has arisen to put those little steps to good use and have a go in the ring, and at the same time raise some money to fund youth work with young people who are LGBTQ+ and in need of safe secure housing... All my favourite things in one event!
On 19th March, me and a bunch of other novice LGBTQ+ fighters (including the INDOMITABLE EMER MARY MORRIS and if you are lucky, the LIONHEARTED NINA SCOTT) will throw our dignity to the wind and have a go at surviving 3 bouts of 2 minutes straight boxing in the ring...! Yikes!
We get 8 weeks training and a massive event laid on basically for free by the amazing Courage Boxing Team, and all we have to do in return is commit to raising money for the Albert Kennedy Trust (akt). It would be wicked if you were up for chucking in some cash towards akt and then even if the whole thing is a humiliating disaster we can limp home to bed knowing that someone at least benefitted from the ordeal :)
This is how akt describes the work they do:
Lots of young people come out as LGBTQ+ to their families and are embraced and supported. But that’s not always the case. Coming out, or being outed as LGBTQ+ can lead to young people being made homeless. Sometimes families are unaccepting and abusive. The locks changed. Possessions destroyed. akt exists to support these young people and can offer safety and hope in an open and accepting environment. We help with housing and also to help them celebrate their identity.
Thanks for your support!
