Story
Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is a genetic condition affecting more than 10,400 people in the UK. You are born with CF and cannot catch it later in life, but one in 25 of us carries the faulty gene that causes it, usually without knowing.
The gene affected by CF controls the movement of salt and water in and out of cells. People with CF experience a build-up of thick sticky mucus in the lungs, digestive system and other organs, causing a wide range of challenging symptoms affecting the entire body eg, chronic lung infections, malabsorption of fats in the body, excessive salt secretion and type 1 Diabetes to name a few.
The Cystic Fibrosis Unit at Glenfield Hospital (off Ward 16) desperately needs upgrading. We are a slowly expanding patient group consisting of 102 patients who use our service on a daily basis. Depending on the severity of their illness –patients will average around 14 inpatient days per patient per year. This is in addition to regular outpatient appointments that they also have to attend.
The unit was built around 1984 (some 35 years ago) and we have 5 individual side-rooms for patient use. We are looking to achieve funding to upgrade these rooms and the corridor (which after 35 years of use most definitely need re-designing and improving to make a rather dull long stay a more positive experience better suited to modern day living and our young adult patient group.
We have been given a donation from the Leicester Hospital Charitable Trust Fund to refurbish one of our CF rooms on our Adult Unit. We are looking to create a modern fresh feel to the rooms, with new flooring, wall art, contempory lighting, integrated storage units and new relaxer chairs.
Of course we would love to do all the rooms, but this will only be possible with further sponsorship, fundraising and any additional support we can get to help us to achieve this!
Ultimately it will make our patient's time in hospital a more positive experience, better suited to present day living for our young adults.
We estimate that just one room will cost around £5,000. But with a further 4 rooms and a corridor to also consider we are going to need a lot more money!
Your donation really can make a significant difference to how people feel, how well they respond to treatments and how quickly they recover. The smallest gift really can help so please, support our fantastic fundraiser and help us raise as much money as possible for our selected area in the Glenfield Hospital.
