The charity im doing this
for is the Marfan Trust. They are the only UK charity that funds medical
research so that more is known about Marfan syndrome and its management.
Marfan syndrome is a
life-threatening genetic disorder, and an early, accurate diagnosis is
essential, not only for people with Marfan syndrome, but also for those with related
disorders. Knowing the signs of these conditions can save lives. Ive choosen this charity
because in early 2014 my friends daughter Skye was diagnosed with Marfan
Syndrome.
Skyes Story
In early 2014 Skye was diagnosed with Marfan Syndrome.
Skye has now seen over 8 different doctors and gone
through several tests over the past year. Due to this disorder Skye has Hyper
mobility in her joints which will affect her movement later in life. She has pectus excavatum (a dip in her chest)
which means her organs have less room to move and grow and has caused her lungs
to only function at 40% capacity. She has very long arms, fingers, legs and
feet. She has a leaky valves in her
heart. The Aorta valve is at risk of
dilation and rupturing in a Marfan patient. This can cause massive internal
bleeding if not closely monitored throughout her life. She also suffers from severe Scoliosis, her
spine is bent and twisted and currently at 40°. She has been wearing a spinal brace for 23
out of 24 hours a day to try and slow the progression and is now on the waiting
list for an operation to have rods fitted to her spine.
Skye still surprises her friends and family. She is such a happy child, even after all the
time she spends in hospital, the doctors pulling her around doing their tests,
and the 23 hours a day she spends in her spinal brace.
