Our son Reece was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes age 8 just over a year ago, Reece is also asthmatic, these are both health problems that you can not physically see. Reeces body has been through the mill but it will not stop him from achieving his goals. Reece wants people to know that he did not choose to age this disease, he did not eat too many sweets or gain too much weight. This could not have been prevented. Reece will also be doing a fund raising day where he can give a talk to people and tell them the difference between type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Reece wants one thing more than anything and that is to find a cure for type 1 diabetes.

As with any type 1 diabetic, Reece has to prick his finger at least 6 times a day, he has to inject himself at least 4 times a day, at times more. He has to count every carb he eats and calculate the amount of insulin he needs to have with that meal or snack. He can’t just pick up snacks like other children his age. Reece can’t just excersise or run around with other children when ever he feels like it, he has to test, if he’s too low he would have to have glucose to allow his Blood glucose to stay at a steady level. If he’s too high before then the majority o the time he would sit out and not join in the activity. There are nights when Reece is scared to go to sleep incase his Blood glucose goes too low and he has a fit in his sleep. He asks me if I have set my alarm, he asks if I will wake up ( I always do ) I can’t tell you how heart breaking it is to know that your child is afraid to go to sleep some nights. He knows I will wake so takes comfort in the fact his parents are there.

What would be great is if one day just maybe this disease can be beaten or prevented. Now that would be great. We know it will most likely not happen in our life time but if we can leave this world knowing that our son helped towards a future with a cureable disease that once had devastating consequences then we would be proud, we are prouder than you could imagine either way that he even wants to try and do this challenges

Thanks for taking the time to read Reece’s story.
