Story
Following a hugely successful fund raising event '4 Will' in 2014, during which we raised over £20,000 for the Teenage Cancer Trust, it's now time to do something for Will's other charitable interest, Make A Wish Foundation (MAWF).
We sadly lost Will to cancer in 2012 and during the last few months of his life he received an incredible level of support to help him achieve some of his own bucket list wishes. Always keen to give back and to help others, Will and his friends raised funds for MAWF during his illness, so I know he would have been pleased to see further support being given to this fantastic charity. The plan is for me to cycle the length of Britain from Lands End to John O'Groats (LEJOG) but not as it's usually done. I will be on my own and will be entirely self supported i.e. no support vehicle and I will be 'wild' camping where possible, or official camp sites where it's not. I will be carrying all the kit for the trip on my bike and I will also, where possible, be riding on the UK's many canal paths and cycle trails, rather than using smooth tarmac. My speed will therefore reflect this and it will be somewhat leisurely but the aim will be to finish rather than to set any records. I will be setting off from Lands End on 30th June 2016.
The total distance will be well over 1000 miles, including planned detours, and it is likely to take me 3-4 weeks.
Anyone who would like to join me for a section of the ride will be very welcome, so if you fancy that please drop me a line at davegibney087t@gmail.com and we can see what can be arranged.
My route and progress during the trip will be visible to all sponsors via some form of electronic media, which has yet to be decided/understood. If you are skilled in such matters and can help me set up the electronics, that would be much appreciated.
