Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
The reason why I particpated in this charity ride for the British Heart Foundation was 2 fold ..firstly I am quite active and was up for the 70 mile physical challenge and more importantly for the following...
A friend's son was recently diagnosed with a genetic heart disease called Hypotrophic Cardiomyopathy ( an enlarged heart). He just turned 21 when this was discovered after playing in a basketball games and suffering chest pains. He was in year 1 of a 4 year medical scholarship from Kentucky University which is a feeder university for the NBA.
Three US University's were after him after he played just 1 season in the Spanish League. He was voted MVP after his team beat a US NBA colleagate draft team in Paris in 2010. As a British born player this Is a major achievement and he was featued on ESPN in the USA as someone to look out for in the future in the NBA
He was a regular in the GB senior basketball team as an under 21and was a dead cert to play in London 2012. Jason is 6ft 11ins and was one session or game away from suffering from sudden death syndrome and his dream of going pro is now over as he has had a pace maker fitted. This disease is a silent killer amongst young men & women who are pursuing a career in sports or who are keen sports persons.
The BHF have been outstanding in the ongoing support and adjustments Jason has had to make in his life.
