Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

For those of you that don't know me I will explain why I am fundraising for Icanho (part of Livability).

On 17 April 2016 I ran a 10k race at Ickworth Park. In a successful attempt to get under a 1 hour finish time I sprinted up the final hill. Unfortunately, as a result of this over exertion I had a stroke that has changed my life. Whilst the stroke happened after this run it wasn't the underlying cause. I still haven't had a diagnosed reason for my stroke and I continue to have tests to find this out. I have now permanently lost 40% of my eyesight, suffer from aphasia (problems with speaking) and cognitive problems. Every day life throws new challenges and facing them can be difficult.

I was fortunate to be referred to Icanho in Stowmarket, they are a specialist rehabilitation centre that supports adults that have suffered brain injury. Since attending there I have made significant improvement in many aspects of my deficits.

To say thank you to Icanho and to help their staff and future patients I have decided to raise money for them. I have decided to do another 10k run. I wanted to run the same race I did when I had my stroke. Unfortunately that race is not happening. I have chosen a race from the same race series so I will run the Hoohah Wimpole Hall 10k on 21st May 2017.  Running for me now has a different outlook and although the likelihood of me having another stroke is lower, I still have the worry that it might happen again. So although it's not a long race, for me it is a real challenge.

I have been fortunate that I have great family support and this continues for this race as my daughter Bethany  and my son Ben are  joining me in this fundraising effort.

If you would like to know more about my stroke and how it has impacted on me, I have written a blog. This can be found at http://davidsstrokeblog.blogspot.co.uk/
