Story

David and Claire Thompson are local fundraising volunteers who have raised money for a variety of charities over the years.

Claire says, ‘David and I are passionate about raising funds for charities close to our hearts. We have had close family members who have been diagnosed with cancer over recent years. David’s father sadly passed away in December 2010 having fought his short battle with an aggressive cancerous tumor. My father was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma, cancer of the bone marrow and blood, in July 2012. Dad sadly passed away in February 2015. Then we lost my dear Grandmother in December 2015 who had Alzheimer’s. Throughout these difficult times, our family have received the much needed help and support from St David Hospice Care, for which we will always be extremely grateful. Our fundraising efforts are our way of giving a little bit back and to do something positive in memory of our loved ones’.

David says, ‘Through our fundraising and taking part in challenge events we have made lots of friends, the type that last a lifetime. You share your emotions, feelings and experiences with likeminded people and whatever we do we always have a great time, if it’s not fun we don’t do it – we put the fun in to FUNdraising!’.

As determined as ever, David and Claire have set themselves some amazing charity challenges in 2017. One of which is to Trek the Ladakh Region and Climb Stok Kangri, a 6153 metre high mountain in the Indian Himalayas, a tremendous challenge which is graded extreme. Put in to perspective the highest mountain in the United Kingdom is Ben Nevis which stands at 1345 metres.  Although Stok Kangri is not considered a technical climb, it does require physical fitness, unwavering determination and self-belief. The main difficulties will be the terrain, extremes of temperatures, the effects of altitude, not to mention being away from home and living on the side of a mountain, in a tent!

For this challenge David and Claire are delighted to be fundraising for St David’s Hospice Care and over the coming months will be organising some exciting fundraising events.
