2 years ago, I walked 45 miles: This time I am running the Saffron Trail Ultra: a 70 mile, continuous, over-night, off-road, unmarked trail run, starting at 6pm from Southend and finishing (some 15hrs later...) in Saffron Walden.
For perspective: the longest run
I've ever raced before was a 1/2 marathon (in March this year!), and 18 miles is
the longest I've ever done in training... This is going to be quite a challenge (that I confess even I'm not sure if I can achieve,
but that I am determined to finish!).
But, the pain and suffering I may experience over the 70 miles is
nothing compared to what the people for whom I am doing it have had to endure:
For my son Alistair: I am raising money to provide cleft lip/palate
surgery to children in deprived parts of the world who would otherwise not receive any help and be forced to live their lives as outcasts.
For my dear friend Tina and my father-in-law Ian: I am raising money to help some very clever people find a cure, or at least
controlling medication, for the horrendous disease that is cancer.
