Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
Exposure to UV radiation is the leading cause of skin cancer. This can be via sunlight or tanning beds. Unsafe exposure doesn't just happen on holiday, it happens in the UK, even when it is cloudy. Which to be fair, accounts for the majority of the British Summer when it isn't raining! Having a tan does not protect you from the harmful effects of the sun.
So, those that have seen me recently might have guessed that I have a skin condition. Those that haven't asked probably don't realise it is a form of skin cancer highlighted through an innovative treatment.
I have have several Basal Cell Carcinoma removed via surgery over the past few years and I am now a year into a topical treatment that is encouraging my own body to fight the cancerous cells.
Cancer is evil enough to go undetected to the body for a long time, until the damage is caused and sometime too late to treat. The cream I am using highlights the cancerous cells and my body fights them like an infection. Pretty cool really. But it comes at a cost.
The British Skin Foundation is the only UK charity dedicated to skin research into cures for skin disease and skin cancer. Research doesn't fund itself and I feel that with my current condition that they are a worthwhile charity to support. I also need a reason to walk 45km in what is bound to be an overcast or downright dismal October day, weather wise!
