Ten years ago we lost the strongest lady I know to cancer. A non-smoking, fit and extremely hard working woman suddenly diagnosed with lung cancer, it was devastating and changed our lives forever. Our Mum bravely fought the disease for 9 months until nothing more could be done and she passed away in January 2011. For those that knew her, I’m sure you’ll agree she was one of the kindest and most thoughtful people out there; she is so greatly missed. Despite medical advances our story is not rare, I have watched while some of my closest friends have also lost their loved ones far too early.
In memory of my Mum, I wanted to do something which would make her proud, follow her ‘never give up’ attitude and raise money for two charities which are close to my heart. CancerResearchUk, as although a world with no cancer is unlikely to happen in our lifetime, research is the only way we can find a cure and prevent others going through what we have been through. And Mind, a brilliant mental health charity whose aim is to ensure that no one suffers alone and has certainly helped me living with grief and bereavement.
On 21st May 2021, I am going to cycle 500 miles in 7 days. The UK route will take me through various important places from my Mum’s life. Having bought my first road bike only 9 months ago to avoid the tube commute during the pandemic, cycling the equivalent distance of London to Frankfurt is certainly going to be a challenge - physically, but more so mentally. Despite training through the winter conditions, the thought of cycling 75 miles every day fills me with fear. I’ll hopefully have some family and friends to join me along the way and of course, my Dad who’s signed up to be the support car and provider of jelly babies to keep me going.
Anything you can donate to make this madness worthwhile will be much appreciated, no matter how small.
Lots of love, Zoë xxxxx
In Memory of Mum, Grandma, Gramps, Grandad, Gaynor, Rebecca, Jane, Rupa and, for those still fighting.
