Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
One thing I was sure about as I stumbled across the line at Brighton in Spring 2013 was that I would never never ever put myself through this again! So much for being sure then.....!
My knees still aren't sure and a few friends have voiced concern about the wisdom of this enterprise but here's the deal;- I helped a friend train for London last year, that's where the notion first appeared. Then I was 60 in January and it's not likely to get any easier plus I have an opportunity to run for Reed's Foundation.
We already have a strong connection with Reed's School in Cobham. As well as being a great school it has a history and an ethos and a charitable Foundation that makes it possible for disadvantaged young people to get a first class education. It's a top place, it reminds me very much of the Grammar School I was fortunate enough to go to.
I completed my 2016 target of just over 1000Km total run mostly in 5Km and 10Km distances and set out in 2017 to push the distance up.
It's been tricky! I haven't covered the mileage I'd intended this year but I have abandoned 5Km runs for 10, 15 and 20Km distances and put a couple of gym sessions in per week as a necessary compromise to keep my right knee in shape.
I've run to work a few times, 15Km (fortunately we have a shower at work) and had to endure a bit of ridicule for struggling on the stairs. Good job we installed a lift!
Three weeks off London I ran three times around Richmond Park, - just over 20 miles with a fair amount of gradient in 3 hours 20mins. Realistically 4 hours is not in range but the good news is the knee held up with no more than 200mg of Neurofen for comfort and apart from tripping over on a gravel path 15 miles in and taking a few chunks out of my other knee I'm in good enough shape and now both knees hurt about the same!
The challenge this week is to keep in shape while at a trade show in Las Vegas. It's not exactly 'fit city', I'm hoping my hotel has a gym, the only people who run outside in Las vegas are bank robbers....
Thanks for reading this, watch out for me on the 23rd, Runner 47110 that's me, hopefully I'll be ahead of the guys in funny suits or carrying builders ladders etc....
Roll on April!
