80 miles for Low Grade Ovarian Cancer! · 3 February 2020

The Low-Grade Serous Ovarian Cancer (LGSOC) Initiative has partnered with the University of Edinburgh to help fund transformational research into low-grade serous ovarian cancer.

Story

I have been living with Low Grade Ovarian Cancer since 2014. My disease is now terminal as it has spread into my chest and throughout my abdomen. After going through two surgical operations, two courses of chemotherapy and two different Hormone Blocking treatments I am managing to survive when many people have died. My options are limited in terms of future treatment unless further research is carried out. I want to walk in memory of all those who have lost their lives through this disease and to prevent this rare cancer from taking more lives..

Low Grade Ovarian Cancer primarily affects younger people in their prime and is a rare sub-type of Ovarian Cancer. It is mostly chemotherapy resistant and so the treatment options are few in comparison to High grade Ovarian Cancer.

Low grade serous ovarian cancer is an under-researched disease and I want to help change this. I want to help Dr Gourley at the Edinburgh Cancer Research Centre to fund the screening of new drugs in the laboratory in order to identify those most likely to be beneficial in the clinic. I have seen how committed Dr Gourley is to finding more effective ways of treating Low grade Ovarian Cancer and we are hugely grateful to him for taking on this challenge.

Now it is time for my challenge. Starting on World Cancer Day which is  4th February 2020 I will walk the equivalent in miles from my home in the New Forest to my son in Glastonbury which is 80 miles. I plan to walk throughout February and then during the UK Ovarian Cancer Awareness month in March. Please help me to get to my goal.
