Story
Donald (Don) Elmore: 18/05/1924 - 31/05/2012
Professor of Biochemistry at Queens University of Belfast 1971-1987, following degrees from Imperial College and posts in Nottingham, Cambridge and Sheffield Universities and the author of many research papers and a book on peptides and proteins.
Don retired with Mae to Eynsham near Oxford, maintaining research interests as Professor Emeritus and holding an honorary post at Oxford University.
He had a lifetime interest in genealogy (his family came from Sleaford, Lincs), philately, music, history, woodwork, photography and sport - he played on the staff cricket teams of several of his universities and was a demon seam bowler!
Don had a coronary artery bypass graft in Belfast in 1986 and was told it would last ten years. In fact he didn't suffer further heart symptoms until about 2009, when he developed progressive angina requiring extensive drug treatment and insertion of a pacemaker. Heart disease ultimately caused his death, but he died at home with his family, where he wished to be.
Don spent many years suporting his late wife and soul-mate Mae through a long and debilitating illness. He was greatly loved and will be missed by his family - his daughters Nicola and Melanie (with her husband Chris), his sister Eileen and his grandchildren Rebecca, Benjamin and Verity.
Don had successful operations for cataract, and was a passionate supporter of St Dunstan's charity for Blind Veterans. He carried a Donor Card and following his death his family were privileged to allow his eyes to be donated so that up to four people could have operations to restore their eyesight. This is therefore a wonderful opportunity to raise funds for Blind Veterans UK.
