Story
When my amazing patient, James, asked me if I wanted to skydive to raise money for CureLeukaemia my first thought was 'NO WAY!!' I'm petrified of heights (I even got scared on the Ben 10 ride at Drayton Manor).
At the time I was administering his chemotherapy so how could I refuse when he was being so selfless and brave?
James was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia. I was fortunate enough to be his research nurse. I was there to see his shock when the bad news was broken. I was there to see the hope in his eyes when he signed the consent form for my clinical trial. I was there when he cried with joy when we told him he was in remission. I was there to see his disappointment when we told him his disease had come back. I was there at his funeral.
James had a huge personality. He would light up a room with his humour and optimism. Always making light of every situation, even during the gruelling effects of his chemotherapy. He selflessly dedicated the last 12 months of his life fundraising for Cure Leukaemia. His dying wish was to raise as much money as possible in a charity skydive. He helped to coordinate the event and it's so sad that he will not be there to see all of his hard work turn into reality. It would be amazing if his legacy will live on and we raise as much money as possible.
I am very proud to call myself a Cure Leukaemia Nurse. I am truly fortunate that I adore my job. I get to offer hope when there is none. I get to give care and support to people in their darkest days. My job would not exist without the charitable donations given to Cure Leukaemia. Please dig deep and give as much as you can.
