Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

I'm setting off from Canterbury on Friday 7th. If you want to follow our meanderings you should go to https://bishopedward.wordpress.com/canterbury-to-rome-2017/ which should start on Thursday 6th.

I am cycling the 1200 miles from Canterbury to Rome in July. I am raising funds for the Friends of Erlestoke Prison in Wiltshire.

I will be following the ancient pilgrimage route, the Via Francigena or Frankish Way, which follows the path which was recorded by Sigeric, Archbishop of Canterbury, in 990AD when he travelled to Rome to meet
the Pope. By happy coincidence, Sigeric was the 7th Bishop of
Ramsbury before moving to Kent, and I am now the 15th.

Erlestoke Prison is near where i live. The Friends support the prisoners, their health, well-being and rehabilitation, as well as their
families. They fund courses and training. They have also donated money to the Chapel. I have taken services in the Chapel, including Christmas Carols and Confirmations. The Friends would eventually like to be able to provide an All Weather sports pitch within the Prison walls.

My pilgrimage will take  14 days of cycling. The route travels down the eastern edge of France, through Switzerland, over the 8500ft Grand
St Bernard Pass, and then down the central spine of Italy to St Peter’s at
Rome.

I have undertaken several such trips before. I cycled this
route with friends ten years ago when we were greeted by Pope Benedict. I have also completed the classic Land’s End to John O’Groats ride. In 2012 i cycled the 1500 miles from Olympia in Greece to the Olympic Stadium just as the Games began.
