Story
Close friends of mine and my late husband Alan, Debbie and Gary Dixon, tragically lost their beloved son Aaron aged just 23 years old, a much loved beautiful lad and treasured brother of Hollie, to an undiagnosed genetic heart defect, ARVC. They were directed to the charity CRY, Cardiac Risk in the Young so that the family could be tested. They were given the all clear, however as Hollie could still go on to develop the same defect, she is now on a screening programme and screened every 18 months.
Although Aaron was a very fit young man, he had been admitted to hospital on two occasions and both times was told he had blacked out due to dehydration. He was never given an ECG and may be here today if he had.
Out of such tragedy Debbie has been so amazing and set up a Memorial Fund within CRY in Aaron's memory. She has raised over £230,000 in order to fund screening for young people.
These screenings are critical for early diagnosis and preventing heart conditions worsening. Of the 2548 young adults she has helped to date, 91 have been referred for further investigation and one young woman, Charlotte Carney, received a heart transplant after discovering she had a serious heart defect.
Debbie is now building on her screening work through a partnership with The English Insitute of Sport and is funding a 12 month screening of elite athletes. She has recently been honoured with a well deserved 'Points of Light' award. She works tirelessly so that as many young people can be screened as possible to try and prevent another family going through this devastating loss.
The family have extremely fond memories of Cumbria as they lived here for number of years and Aaron was actually born in Helme Chase Maternity Unit in Kendal on 23rd September, 1987.
In order that we can bring Debbie and her team to Cumbria, I have made a commitment to raise the £10,000 necessary to cover the cost of screening over two days - 1st and 2nd August, 2020.
I would greatly appreciate any support and/or donations to assist me in achieving my goal and bring this much needed screening to our area.
