We breed and train guide dogs to give blind people freedom and mobility

Story

My name is Emily Davison, I'm nineteen years old and I study BA English at Goldsmtihs University.

Growing up, life was not exactly a bed of roses, I was born with the condition Septo Optic Dysplasia leaving me with no sight in my left eye and 10% peripheral central vision in my right eye. Due to this I resolved to study in the confines of my own home. I prospered and became accedemically very sucsessful, however the one thing that I craved from a young age was the one thing that no amount of reading could physcially give me.

Freedom, freedom was the one thing that no amount of imagining could fully grant me. I would delve into the worlds created by Charles Dickens, Lewis Carol, Roald Dhaul and J K Rowling where I had no limits. But, when it was time to re enter the world, I was once again isolated from the external world outside my bedroom.

But, then Unity came along, in the year of 2012 Guide Dogs for the Blind paired me with my first guide dog and the my new life began.

Now with my beatiful, calm and loving four legged friend by my side I feel as if I can conquere the world. My guide dog has enabled me to see so many places, do so many things and meet so many people.

Now, with Unity I have seen the Lake District, traveled the many winding streets of London and am living my life to the full in University.

I am extremely indebted to Guide Dogs and count my blessings everday for what they have given me.

Support my online blogging campaign on fashioneyesta.com, which involves a one night event for Guide Dogs and a raffle.

Best Wishes

The ability to get around is vital in order to live a full life yet thousands of people with sight loss never leave home alone. We empower visually impaired people to do that and rely on the support of the public to fund the guide dog service.
