The RNLI are a charity very close to our hearts especially living in the South West.
As many of you know 10 years ago this year I lost my brother, James. He was surfing off Watergate Bay, Newquay. He had an epileptic fit whilst in the water and drowned.
He was pulled to the beach by two surfers where the RNLI attempted to resuscitate him before he was air-lifted to Truro hospital. Although he never regained consciousness, he was kept alive through a ventilator. If it was not for the RNLI, I would have never have had the opportunity to spend time with him before the ventilator was switched off. The RNLI gave me and my family 3 days to spend with James and that to me is invaluable and time that I will eternally treasure.
As we have seen in the news this Summer the RNLI are so valuable to all of our coasts and allow everyone to enjoy the beaches. The RNLI are a charity and are not government funded, they all have their own separate jobs as well as being on call for the RNLI.
Shortly after Jimmi passed away, my two older brothers and I ran half marathons, and along with many other family and friends we managed to raise £15,000. We then used the funds for the RNLI to purchase an in-shore lifeboat, which was named ‘Jimmi’. This lifeboat has been used to rescue many people finding themselves in difficulty off the North Cornish coast, and has also been used to train the RNLI lifeguards before the Summer seasons.
In May we launched "Jimmi II" after completing half marathons and then the London Marathon. Jimmi II has been used this summer making further rescues to anyone who finds themselves in danger off the North Coast. Without sponsorship non of this would have been possible.
In October myself and Naomi will be running the Great West Run to try and raise even more money for the RNLI. It is such incredible work what they do and this is our way of saying thank you.
