Story
Doing a sky-dive has always been one of my biggest dreams and happened to mention it to my husband last year, one night while we were watching “Celebrity Get me Out of Here”. On Christmas day I opened my present and a piece of paper fell out: it was a voucher to do a tandem sky-dive!! At the beginning, a mixed feeling of excitement and terror hit me. Having worked at the hospital’s Charity for a number of years, I saw what a great impact fundraising activities have on the patients’ experience; therefore, I couldn’t miss this opportunity to raise some funds for a cause personal to me and I booked the jump for the 23rd May.
Ward 19 at Heartlands looked after my uncle for about 5 years when he was going through his treatment for lymphoma. Uncle Michael (Mike to the grown-ups but as kids we were never allowed to call him this) was first diagnosed 8 years ago and underwent his treatment at Heartlands, which took him into remission. Unfortunately the cancer returned and so did the visits to ward 19 for more chemotherapy. In the end, Uncle Michael lost his fight to his cancer 3 years ago now and the family all miss him sorely. We are all still immensely grateful for the care and support he received from the staff at Ward 19 through his treatment and in the last phase of his life.
This jump is not just an extreme, thrilling experience: it is an applause, a fitting tribute to the efforts of the staff at our hospital, that every day, goes above and beyond to “jump” through that vertiginous distance between cancer and life. Please help me reach this goal, support me as much as possible and share my page between your friends, family and colleagues.
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
