The Fairplay School; a Happier, More Effective Learning Environment in Payatas

Fairplay Center; a Safe, Effective Learning Environment in Payatas · 26 January 2016
Imagine a school where happiness, confidence, and empathy matter more than grades. Imagine a school run by students and teachers together; where relationship is at the heart of the classroom.

We believe children learn best not when competing with each
other but when working together. We believe that children should be free to pursue their interests and individual talents, to learn at their own pace, in a supportive and flexible environment.
At Fairplay we believe every child deserves a fair chance. When 50% of students in the Philippines will drop out of school (Nava, 2009) we need alternatives, particularly in the poorest communities where the dropout rate is even higher.
Payatas is one of the largest and poorest slums in the Philippines. Here we built the Fairplay Center, a safe space for children, who are typically involved in child labour from 6 years old onwards, to come and learn, play, and rest. Children learn together, supporting one another to develop.
Previously we could then select the children ready to go back to the nearby public schools. While for the individual children we sponsor this has shown good results, with classrooms of 60-80 kids on average, putting more and more children into this system is not viable.
So our goal for 2016 is to completely transition the Fairplay Center into a full, registered school in order to offer full-time, quality learning in a space sorely lacking positive and constructive feedback.
A better education system is possible. Thanks for your support.
