Story
From 25 November to 10 December, I’ll be taking part in Refuge’s 16 Days of Active-ism challenge, moving 5km every day to raise vital funds for women and children experiencing domestic abuse.
On any given day, Refuge supports thousands of women and their children—providing safety, advocacy, emergency accommodation, and hope. Every single £1 genuinely makes a difference.
I’m taking part for a very personal reason. I have experienced domestic abuse myself, and I know how frightening, isolating, and overwhelming it can be. With support, I eventually found my way to safety and began rebuilding my life—something I know not all women get the chance to do. That’s why I’m so passionate about supporting Refuge’s work.
Refuge recently shared the case study of Hayley, whose story has stayed with me and strengthened my commitment to this challenge.
Hayley died on Monday 8th May 2023, after fighting for her life for two days. She was described as brave, fearless, and dedicated to her two young boys—her whole world. She wouldn’t have been scared of dying, but she would never have wanted to die.
Her death is a devastating reminder of what is at stake. Too many women lose their lives to domestic abuse. Too many children lose their mothers. Too many families carry a grief that never should have existed.
I often think about how different things could be if more women were able to access the support they need early enough. That’s why I’m doing this. If this project helps just one woman get away from her abuser, then it will be worth it.
If you’re able, I would be incredibly grateful for any support—whether that’s a donation, sharing my fundraising page, or cheering me on during these 16 days.
