Epilepsy Action is creating a world without limits for everyone affected by epilepsy, connecting people with others, and providing support and information you can trust. We’re calling out the misunderstanding, prejudice and barriers that stop people with epilepsy living their best life.

Story

WELCOME TO OUR STORY

 2 years ago our Son Dan was diagnosed with Epilepsy-here is our story;

In the begining I thought Dan was just ignoring me when we were talking, we would be in the middle of a conversation and he would completley blank out. At first I thought it was just his age, I mean how could I possibly have anything interesting to say!

In the end I decided to take him to see the Doctor, she said it was probably nothing but would refer him to see a Paediatric Neurologist.

It was obvious the next morning when Dan woke up that something was very wrong. It's very hard to decribe, but Dan couldn't remember anything, who he was,who we were, his favourite football team(Liverpool) or anything of any importance. He couldn't get himself dressed and when I asked him to brush his teeth, he got in the shower.

I rang the Doctor and she said that he sounded as if he was post ictal? I thought he was having a nervous breakdown. It did not occur to me at that time that this had anything to do with Epilepsy.

We took him to the Children's ward where his behaviour got even more bizarre, he told the nurses the roof was going to cave in and other odd things. The Doctor's were now starting to talk Epilepsy, we couldn't quite grasp this, as does that sound like Epilepsy to you?

Over the next few months Dan had 2 EEG's and an MRI scan and it was confirmed that Dan had Epilepsy. Dan has Absence Seizures- basically Epilepsy without the convulsions. He can have prolonged seizures which can last for hours if not treated with emergency drugs.

It took quite a while to get his medication right and we have had to change it once, but things are a bit more settled at the moment.

One of the worst things about it is having no-one to talk to who understands, Dan has been through a lot and I'm sure he would benefit from talking to other children with the same problems. The thing is, is that he seems to have decided that he is ashamed of his Epilespy and doesn't want anyone to know about it!

This is why I have decided to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, not only to raise funds for Epilepsy Action but to raise awareness as well. I hope to get Dan involved with fund raising (have you tried to motivate a 12 year old) by doing events at school.

I will keep this page updated with my fundraising- I hope to be doing coffee mornings, car boot sales, a cake stall  a quiz and as many other things as I can manage.

So please, please, please help me out by donating money to this worthy cause.
