Story

The team conducting the cycle ride are raising money for BLESMA and The Wounded Warrior Project.  The cycle ride is the Race Across America and participants cover 3000 miles in 9 days.

The team of 8 cyclists are all serving or ex-serving members of the Royal Logistic Corps (5 being Ex Bomb Disposal) apart from a single member who is Ex REME.  Three of this team were members of the Felix End2End cycle team who cycled from Land’s End to John O’Groats in 2010 raising £42,000 for BLESMA and we were humbled to recieve the inaugural BLEMSA fund raising endeavour award.  Rob Evans completed the admin for the cycle ride, David Timmins QGM and Peter Graham completed the ride. In July 2009 Davie and his fellow IEDD team members were involved in an IEDD blast where he sustained injuries losing his right eye, the hearing in his right ear and also suffering other serious injuries to his face and body.  Three other members of the LEJOG cycle team were also injured. I was the Casualty Visiting Officer and I decided we should conduct the ride as a focus for rehabilitation.

The RAAM provides us all an opportunity to raise further monies for our chosen charities and conduct the toughest cycle ride in the world. A bit of a step up from Land's End to John O’Groats!

A few words about BLESMA.

BLESMA is a national charity that directly supports all of our Service men and women who have lost limbs and the use of limbs or the loss of eyesight in the honourable service of our country. We understand the needs of a military amputee like no other national charity in the United Kingdom.

Formerly known as The British Limbless Ex-Service Men’s Association, we have existed in one guise or another since the First World War and have continued to support veterans since then.

BLESMA exists to empower and promote the welfare and wellbeing of all serving and ex-service men and women who may have rehabilitative needs post limb loss. We are also committed to supporting surviving partners and dependents of deceased military personnel.

A few words about the Wounded Warrior Project.

The charity’s mission is to honour and empower Wounded Warriors. With the vision to foster the most successful, well-adjusted generation of wounded service members in our nation's history.
