Every day in the UK 1,100 people will hear the words ‘you have cancer’, but 40% of cancer cases are preventable. While society continues searching for a cure, we are investing millions into our prevention & survival work, helping people live healthier, free from the devastating effects of cancer.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page. I am running the half marathon in my beloved hometown of Cambridge (UK) to raise money for World Cancer Research Fund. I loath self promotion, but I loath cancer more - so here goes.

WCRF is the world's leading cancer prevention charity and their work funding and analysing robust science is absolutely critical for us to beat cancer. Their policy work also helps governments implement policies that reduce non-communicable disease like cancer, cardiovascular disease and diabetes. WCRF deserves all of the money we can give them to help people prevent and beat cancer

Running doesn't come naturally to me. Give me a pool or a bike any day, but I wanted to take this ultimate challenge as I wanted to prove to myself I could train and run a half marathon. My MS can get in the way of me completing some of my goals, but I have decided to persevere with my training and compete on the day regardless, because I don't want a disease to stop me. The training has forced me to keep fit and physically active through the first months of an English winter and then through the notoriously lazy Christmas/New Year period.

Physical activity is an extremely important weapon to fight so many illnesses including MS but also cancer. WCRF's Cancer Prevention Recommendations include keeping physically active as part of everyday life. Check out the WCRF Cancer Prevention Recommendations here - https://www.wcrf.org/dietandcancer/cancer-prevention-recommendations

I want to walk the talk (or run the talk, in this case) when I preach these messages. Being active is not easy for everyone, especially those suffering from diseases or disabilities but also those who aren't able to access organized fitness because of cost, isolation or time. But I am encouraged by so many people to stay active - my family, my work, my partner, my friends and also my MS community online.

Disease is painful, for those who suffer and for the families who have to watch. Prevention is better than a cure and WCRF works tirelessly to improve the science around diet and lifestyle so we can prevent so much unnecessary suffering.
