Story

You may or may not know why I am out riding my bike. Well, I'm raising awareness of PTSD and mental health following 'my stuff' that came up for me after I had left the service. And helping to raise money for the Firefighters Charity and serving, and retired colleagues.

After being in some dark places, I picked myself up and in doing so I have written 3 books about my career and Fire Service life, not only to highlight issues but also to encourage and inspire others to seek self help alternative therapies and not be afraid to openly speak about it and if needed, to seek professional help.

The money from book sales is being donated to The Fire Fighters Charity and Bombeiros in Portugal.

The Firefighters Charity provide specialist lifelong support for members of the UK's fire services community, empowering individuals to achieve mental, physical and social wellbeing throughout their lives. Whatever their reason for coming to the Charity whether they are injured, recovering from an illness, suffering from stress or anxiety their teams take the time to understand each persons' mental, physical and social needs. To ensure the Charity can do this for over 5,000 people a year and to meet the £9m cost of operating its support services, it is dependent on regular donations from fire and rescue service personnel, past and present, as well as the general public. None of us knows if and when our job will catch up with us. I was always fine and always led by example, asking my crew to join me in getting tasks done. It was when I had too much time on my hands, having retired and being forced into a strict lockdown that my 'stuff' raised its ugly head. Reach out and stay connected. The Firefighters Charity is there for us and our families. We work together and deal with incidents as a team so we don't have to deal with issues or injuries alone either. Support, encourage and inspire. Exercise is a fantastic alternative therapy and a brilliant way of keeping ourselves healthy too. A healthy body is a healthy mind and vice versa.
