This summer, I was lucky enough to volunteer in Kathmandu, Nepal. A group of us went out and were warmly welcomed by the wonderful people at Hindu-Vidyapeeth Nepal - a boarding school in the outskirts of the city. 

The main purpose of the trip was to take over some of the children's classes - all of which are taught in English. We also marked homework, set (in hindsight quite brutal) exams, and even had to give the occasional warning to those who weren't settling down. Our aim was to give to the children as much as we could for the 6 week period we were staying there, yet during this time I can say without a doubt that they were the ones who made a lasting impact on all of us. 

We would not have been able to have this experience without those who work at the school, the headmaster Vishnu Sir (the titles go after the name in Nepal), Ghanshyam Sir, and so many more making our stay so wonderful. Never have I met more contented people. There was an underlying care that eminated from every teacher within the school, and this had a profound effect on not only us, but every child within it.

The school has suffered some severe earthquake damage, reducing one of the buildings to rubble and making many of the playground facilities unable to be used. It is low fee paying, and the fees are spread such that the children who cannot afford an education are still looked after.

The people who call this school home, work round the clock to ensure that the best is done with what they have, but with some help from us it will make their lives much easier. 

To help raise money, my mother and I will be running a half-marathon later this year and keep you updated on our little journey.
