Event: Rob Burrow Leeds Marathon 2023, on 14 May 2023
In memory of Alexander Cockerell
The Rob Burrow Leeds Marathon will take place on Sunday 14 May 2023 and has been inspired by former Leeds Rhinos captain, Kevin Sinfield OBE, and his fundraising challenges in recent years in support of his friend and team mate Rob Burrow.

Story

On Sunday 14th May I am taking part in the Rob Burrow Leeds Marathon. This is the 1st marathon taking the name of Rob Burrow the former Leeds Rhinos Rugby league player who has courageously fought Motor Neurone Disease since he was diagnosed in December 2019. Through the bravery of Rob and his family, and the tremendous efforts of his mate Kevin Sinfield,  MND has been brought to the public eye - creating an awareness of the devastating effects of the illness, and raising million of pounds in much needed funds to help families, and carry out research into treatment and a potential cure.

My Dad was diagnosed with MND in August 2019. At the time we knew very little about the illness, all we knew was that there was no cure. MND is a rapidly progressing terminal illness which stops signals from the brain reaching the muscles.  We as a family would soon see how it can rob a person of their ability to move, speak, swallow, and ultimately breathe on their own. My Dad battled the illness for 6 months and passed away in February 2020.

Over the last few years the awareness of MND has increased through campaigns led by Rob and his family, Kevin Sinfield, the late Doddie Weir and other high profile sports people, bravely sharing their personal journeys. There has been  much progress in research, but still a long way to go.

This won't be the fastest marathon I've ran (the Yorkshire hills will make sure of that!) but to me it will be the most meaningful.

I will be running in memory of my Dad, and all those who have lost their battle with MND; in support of those people & their families bravely fighting the illness just now; with thanks for all the organisations, carers, nurses, friends & families who provide help & support; and with hope for all the doctors & scientists who are striving to find ways to help manage the illness, and ultimately a cure.

It will be an emotional day for sure, not just the running of the marathon, but being part of a community of thousands of people getting together to fight this dreadful illness.
