I am now 62, and have worked for the last 24 years in the traffic enforcement market and now, would like to give something back.

Road Safety does not figure highly in the world of sponsored events and it should cause people to question why this is, especially when you consider that there were 1,870 people killed and 24,770 killed or seriously injured (KSI) in reported road accidents in the year ending March 2011, equating to around 5 deaths a day on Great Britain’s roads. Although this figure has reduced over the last few years, provisionally, it has been reported that there has been an increase in the year to March 2012.

To this end, I set myself a challenge to cycle from John O’Groats to Lands End to promote and support ‘Road Safety’ which I have now completed.

The challenge started on Monday 20 May 2013 and ran through to Sunday 23 June 2013.

Many others have made this trip before and to make it special, I devised “The GB Extreme Tour”, a cycle route that takes in the geographical extremes of the UK mainland,

The extremes are as follows:

[1] Dunnet Head – The most Northerly point.

[2] John O’Groats – Lands End (the furthest distance between two settlements).

[3] Ardnamurchan Lighthouse – The most Westerly point.

[4] Ben Nevis (climb) – The highest point.

[5] Whalley – The most central point.

[6] Church Flatts – The furthest point from the sea in any direction.

[7] Holme Fen – The lowest point.

[8] Lowestoft Ness – The most Easterly point.

[9] Lavernock Point – The highest tidal flow.

[10] The Lizard – The most Southerly point.

[11] Against the prevailing wind.

The ride (and climb) took 35 days inclusive of 4 rest days and covered some 1,500+ miles plus a 4,409ft (1,344m) trek up Ben Nevis.

With the exception of the climb day, each day was planned to cover around 50 miles, 30 different cycling legs for the journey.

Brake is my chosen charity because of the exceptional work which they carry out for Road Safety.
