Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

Over the past couple of years we have been supporting “Project Peru” a charity set up to help some of the most impoverished people in Peru. It focuses around the shantytown of Las Laderas where there are 70,000 people living in makeshift homes. We took a trip there in June 2011 to help construct houses – this was a truly amazing and humbling experience. The people were so welcoming and extremely grateful, touched that people care enough to fly over from another country to help them. We completed 30 houses and since then the Amoria Bond Charitable Trust have also paid for a new soup kitchen, as when we visited it we were shocked to find the roof was falling in and they had no gas to cook on, yet it was vital lifeline for many in the community of Las Laderas feeding over 500 children and vulnerable people daily. As you can imagine, there's so much that could be done there however every little helps and makes a huge impact of peoples lives and I'm glad we've had the opportunity to contribute.

Many families live on 1 Sol a day (23p) and so children go hungry and are not able to go to school as they have to pay for this privilege. Many children work every afternoon in order to pay for the opportunity to get an education for a few hours. Fortunately with the help of Project Peru there is a glimmer of hope for some of the poorest children, those in quite desperate situations and orphans; a Children’s refuge specifically put together to care for them and try and provide a better life. We stayed at the refuge with these 36 kids on our visit and they made it a joy to be there, welcoming us with a show. They were extremely well behaved and as their guests, they insisted we ate first at dinner. Some of the workers had themselves been occupants at the refuge and so they express their gratitude by helping others now.

Instead of giving us a wedding gift, we have set up the facility for you to make a donation towards getting these Peruvian children through school. It costs 800-1000 Sols to put a child through school for 1 year, so for every £200 donated this will pay for one child to get their education.
