Story
As someone who’s main coping strategy is to compartmentalise
and “cross that bridge when we come to it” its taken me a little while to write this…
August 2022 my family and I were delivered a devastating blow, when my Dad was diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer, like most with this disease his cancer was detected at Stage 4 and inoperable deeming his condition terminal.
On March the 5th I will be running the Cambridge Half Marathon for Pancreatic Cancer UK. Pancreatic cancer is the 5th most common cause of cancer deaths in the UK with an alarmingly poor prognosis and survival rate. The 1-year survival rate for pancreatic cancer after diagnosis in the UK is just 8 in 100.
There are several reasons for Pancreatic Cancer being difficult to diagnose until late stages of the disease, the pancreas is a small organ fairly deep in the abdomen and therefor early tumours are likely missed on examination as they cannot be felt during routine check-ups. Another factor is that the symptoms are vague, things such as indigestion, tummy and back pain and loss in appetite.
My family and I are fortunate enough that my Dad is still with us and is receiving amazing care from the cancer day unit at Addenbrookes hospital. We are also being supported by amazing teams from Macmillan. These organisations have guided us and reassured us in decisions surrounding my Dad’s care and most importantly enabled us to have more time. He is my hype man, the voice in the background that reminds me I got this and if nothing else my partner in crime!
Although this is a just giving page, the main purpose is to raise awareness! I understand entirely that after the festive season and the current cost of living that money is tight for everyone. If I can just ask you to take 5 minutes of your day to share this and read any of the information, I have attached at the bottom of the page my family and I will be hugely grateful.
From me and my family thank you so much for reading this & I guess Ill see you at the finish line (even if I do have to crawl over it)!
