Story

So for those of you who don’t know:

On the 22nd of February 2016 Kiara-Mai (my daughter) was hospitalised because she was suffering from seizures due to extremely high temperatures of over 40c, dehydration, sepsis of the blood, and she also lost her ability to walk, along with numerous other symptoms. After a series of tests, blood tests and lumbar puncture tests, she was sent to The Freeman Hospital in Newcastle to see a specialist who confirmed she suffered with an aneurysm on her coronary artery. She was later diagnosed with Kawasaki Disease. As she was asympatamic, (meaning she didn’t show the common signs of the disease) it took longer for us to receive her diagnosis, so we were in hospital for longer than the typical patient.

In hospital, she received a 2 week course of antibiotics via IV and an infusion of immunoglobulin, followed by months of medication and observations from three specialists. Eventually we were finally told the aneurysm had shrunk to a reasonable size and she could stop the medication. For now Kiara has resumed a normal life with the long term impact, unknown at this point. However, this month she experienced her first day in school, a day we wouldn’t have had without the NHS hospital staff and BHF research. So I have decided to raise money by doing the 10K for BHF to give back.

***Kawasaki Disease is a rare condition that affects children mainly under 5, around 8 in every 100,000 children develop it in the UK each year, with 1% of cases being fatal.***
