The Gift of Kindness Fund supports End of Life Care at the Freeman Hospital and Royal Victoria Infirmary and is one of many charitable funds administered by the Newcastle Hospitals NHS Charity (reg. 1057213), the official charity supporting the work of the Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
When a hospital patient is at the end of their life, there are stresses placed upon their loved ones that they may never have experienced before in their lives. It is not unusual
for families and friends to spend many days at their loved one’s bedside in whatever ward or setting that may be within the hospital. Sometimes, families have to stay
unexpectedly or may have had to travel some distance at short notice, with no time to make preparations for an extended hospital stay.
The Gift of Kindness Fund provides comfort packs for families staying at a patient’s bedside in one of our hospitals. The packs include toiletries, drink sachets,
snacks, tissues, a neck pillow, puzzle books and other items to help visitors freshen up and make their stay more
bearable. The original idea was conceived by members of Heaton Baptist Church in Newcastle who generously donated ‘Kindness of a Stranger’ packs to families
of patients receiving end of life care. The packs were so well-received that the Fund has now been set up to help
ensure the continuation of the service in the long term.
It is hoped that as the Fund grows in the future, we may also be able to provide memory boxes for children
and grandchildren with the help of our Chaplaincy Service and designated areas in both hospitals for families where they would be able to take a shower, rest and have some refreshments.
