Our 'speedway family' lost Australian rider Rob Ashton just before christmas last year,.... He and his family were strong in character and very eager to make the most of the time Rob was allowed.  He was trying desperately to make it to his 50th birthday a couple months after christmas.... But the chequered flag was waved a little early and he never made it.

Although I never knew Rob,... Nor did he ride or have anything to do with Leicester speedway or the 'Lions'... I was very touched by what I read and saw on Facebook,... and I did just have a little typed chat or two with him  ;-)

I work volunterally at the new Leicester speedway stadium and When I approached the supporters commitee and the Lions management, with my sketch plans of the open day etc,... I was given every assistance and help and I am grateful for the continued support.

I have been given the 1st of July which is a Sunday to open up and host a real gala day at the stadium with walks of the track...static bike displays...many many speedway bikes etc from the early days through to the Lions machines of this season.  I have also got road bikes and road-race machines along with some trials and Moto X bikes to be seen and heard  !!

A lot of old school riders and some newer....younger faces will be on hand to sign autographs and have piccys taken with fans etc etc...  there will be raffles and prize draws too.

my aim is to treat the day in the way I think....I hope Rob would have wanted it to be run,... with fun for the whole family and with the sights and sounds, and smells of speedway,...  putting down and banishing the pain and dread that we call cancer....  it can be done with all of us enjoying a day like this...
