Alzheimer’s Research UK is the UK’s leading dementia research charity. We’re striving for a cure, by revolutionising the way we treat, diagnose and prevent dementia.

Story

Running the London Marathon has been something I’ve always wanted to do. It’s a huge challenge but one I’m so excited for.

The countdown is on and I can’t quite believe in under a month I am running 26 miles. I reached a HUGE  milestone and ran 20 miles on 3rd September. Training is hard but it’s paying off as I still felt I had more in me at the end. I can’t believe I still have 6 more miles on top of that long 3 hour run on race day though!

I’ve always said when I run my first marathon it has to be in my home town, London, but more importantly for a cause I care so much about. My Nanny was diagnosed with Dementia and I’ve seen the impact this horrible disease has had on her but also on our family and sadly it’s only going to get worse. Despite everything, my Nanny always has a smile on her face and is the most positive person I know. I want to do this for her and I’m so determined.

I started running in lockdown 2020 and have grown to love it. Since then I built up a lot of training and ran my first half marathon, never in a million years did I think that was possible. I remember thinking 5K was hard enough on my work lunch breaks in lockdown. A half marathon was huge and running over that finish line was only the start.

I’ve always looked up to my Dad and watching him run the London Marathon was amazing. The crowds, the support we gave him, the atmosphere, it was just incredible and a proud moment for us all. Now it’s my turn…ah!

About Dementia

Our brains control everything we think, feel, say and do. There are diseases that stop a person’s brain from working properly. When a person has one of these diseases, they may have problems remembering, thinking and speaking. They may find it harder to do everyday things and may not seem like the person they used to be. Doctors use the word dementia to describe these different problems. Dementia is caused by physical diseases, most commonly Alzheimer’s.

Alzheimer’s Research UK is the UK’s leading dementia research charity. The charity is dedicated to causes, diagnosis, prevention, treatment and a cure.

Their mission is to bring about the first life-changing dementia treatment by 2025. It’s crazy to think there are no treatments to stop or cure these diseases, these are diseases that no-one has yet survived.

With your support, they are here to make breakthroughs possible. Diseases like cancer and HIV/AIDS can now be treated and we can make the same progress for people with dementia.

Thank you so much for supporting me. It means a lot.
