Great North Run 2022 · 17 September 2021 to 11 September 2022 ·

At Alzheimer’s Society we’re working towards a world where dementia no longer devastates lives. We do this by giving help to those living with dementia today, and providing hope for the future by campaigning to make dementia the priority it should be and funding groundbreaking research.

Story

I am running The Great North Run with my Mum and Auntie in September to raise money for Alzheimer’s Society and to help raise awareness of Lewy body dementia as this is the type of dementia my Grandad has been diagnosed with. Lewy body dementia (LBD) is a disease associated with abnormal deposits of a protein called alpha-synuclein in the brain. These deposits, called Lewy bodies, affect chemicals in the brain whose changes, in turn, can lead to problems with thinking, movement, behavior, and mood.

Dementia is a horrible, progressive disease which is causing us to lose Grandad bit by bit. Although it’s terribly sad seeing him deteriorate, his great sense of humour keeps us all going. 😅

Grandad has always encouraged me to try my best in all sorts of sports and is still always interested to know how my netball team gets on! He is now so proud that we’re running for him as “Alan’s Team”.

Any donations or encouragement will be very gratefully received and appreciated. 😃

Alzheimer’s Society is transforming the landscape of dementia forever.Until the day we find a cure, we will create a society where those affected by dementia are supported and accepted, able to live in their community without fear or prejudice.
