Story

29/4/2010

Well, I made it! 26.2 miles in 4 hours, 47 minutes and 59 seconds. It was a fantastic day, awesome from start to finish, and I would recommend anyone who's even remotely contemplating it to get signed up now. It's definitely a day I'll remember forever.

Thanks to everyone for all the text messages, e-mails and facebook messages of support and a special thanks to those who made it out onto the course to support me, just trying to spot you in the crowd helped pass away the miles!

And finally, thank you to everyone that has sponsored me in the last few months. Watching the total slowly rise towards 1500 definitely helped get me out onto the streets for training runs. You've all contributed to a fantastic cause that will really change people's lives.

If anyone else would still like to sponsor me, there's still time. It's not too late and anything you can give can make a real difference to people all over the world. Just £5 pays for a child to be fully immunized against diphtheria, polio, tetanus and TB in remote communities in Burma. If you give £10, that can help prevent malaria by distributing mosquito nets to families around the world. £25 buys radios to help raise awareness of life threatening diseases such as HIV in countries like Rwanda and Cambodia. And £50 trains community volunteers to deal with preventable diseases such as malaria, TB and HIV.

Thanks again for all your support over the last few months. And especially last weekend. And thanks for all your generosity.

Until the next time....

Greg

Update...

First of all, another massive thank you to all of you who have sponsored me. You've all been so generous and my total is now over 1000 pounds! Great work everyone.

But, with only a week to go until marathon day there's still a long way to go to 1500 pounds. Anyone who hasn't sponsored me yet... please give generously! It’s a really worthwhile cause, and even a small donation can help change lives.

On the training front, things have been a little disrupted in recent weeks due to a few injuries (mainly a dodgy right knee), but I'm still confident of getting round the course... even if I have to crawl! It might not quite be the four hour attempt I was hoping for, but one way or another I'll get to the finish line.

Thanks again for taking the time to read this, and for supporting such a great cause.

Update...

I'm just about half way there on two fronts now. I ran 13.5 miles on Saturday in just under 2 hours. Not bad for my first half marathon distance. Some stiffness in my legs yesterday and today, but overall I don't feel too bad.

More importantly though, we're nearly half way to our fund raising target. Thanks so much to everyone that has sponsored me so far. I'm completely overwhelmed by your generosity.

For those that haven't sponsored me yet, please get out the debit card and donate some money. This is a great cause and every penny you give helps. Just £5 pays for a child to be fully immunized against diphtheria, polio, tetanus and TB in remote communities in Burma. If you give £10, that can prevent malaria by distributing mosquito nets to families around the world. £25 buys radios to help raise awareness of life threatening diseases such as HIV in countries like Rwanda and Cambodia. And £50 trains community volunteers to deal with preventable diseases such as malaria, TB and HIV.

If you’re still not convinced, check out the promo video H has done for me on Facebook.

There's no time like the present... so don't wait, donate!

Thanks for taking the time to read my update.

Training Update...

Training is going great. 10.5 mile run in the bag today. Making it nearly 22 miles this week. It’s somewhat scary to think that the Marathon is only 10 weeks away and I haven't even run a full one over the course of a week yet... never mind in 4 hours!

Fund raising is also going very well. Massive thanks to everyone that has donated so far, between you you've donated over £500, over a third of the way to my target. But there's still a long way to go, so anyone who hasn't donated so far, please dig deep and give generously... it’s for a very worthy cause... Here's a reminder of what your money could do:

£5 pays for a child to be fully immunized against diphtheria, polio, tetanus and TB in remote communities in Burma.

£10 prevents malaria by distributing mosquito nets to families around the world.

£25 buys radios to help raise awareness of life threatening diseases such as HIV in countries like Rwanda and Cambodia.

£50 trains community volunteers to deal with preventable diseases such as malaria, TB and HIV.

£100 could provide life saving medicines during a childbirth emergency.

Thanks for taking the time to visit my Just Giving page.

Thank you for visiting my fundraising page.

Not content with the not insignificant challenge of planning a wedding this year, I've also decided to run the London Marathon... 26.2 miles of hard graft around the capital city.

Health Unlimited help the poorest and most marginalised people in the world to gain access to health care. Their focus is overcoming poverty as a route to better health services. It’s a fantastic charity as it is trying to attack the root cause of so many people’s problems... poverty.

You and I take our health system for granted, and often go one step further in putting it down. Many people in the world do not have the chance for free health care as we do.

You can help to change this by donating now to my fundraising campaign. Here's what your money could do:

£5 pays for a child to be fully immunized against diphtheria, polio, tetanus and TB in remote communities in Burma.

£10 prevents malaria by distributing mosquito nets to families around the world.

£25 buys radios to help raise awareness of life threatening diseases such as HIV in countries like Rwanda and Cambodia.

£50 trains community volunteers to deal with preventable diseases such as malaria, TB and HIV.

£100 could provide life saving medicines during a childbirth emergency.

Please give as much you feel you can to this very worthy cause. Every little helps!
