Story
GVI Laos’ goal is to have a positive impact on the development of the Lao community, by increasing the choices, life-chances and employment opportunities of a diverse range of financially disadvantaged students through increased access to education. Our project equitably supports target groups of disadvantaged students including:
• Novice Monks
• Lay people: male and female, children and adults
• Young girls from a local organisation that rescues girls who have been tricked or forced into the sex industry.
To Reach our Objectives We Offer:
• English language lessons
• Female-only classes and workshops
• Scholarships for secondary, tertiary and vocational education and training
• Medical and basic needs support.
This increases groups and individuals’ access to employment opportunities, strengthens self-determination and contributes to the development of Laos’ society as a whole.
The time has come for this year’s annual Charitable Trust Challenge! Each year we hold an event to raise funds to continue to provide sponsorships and educational, medical and general support for these dedicated groups of Lao students. This year, sponsored by families, friends, former volunteers, GVI alumni and generous donors from around the world, our passionate volunteers and staff will participate in the traditional practice of Alms Giving to Monks and Novices at 5am for 5 teaching days in a row! Alms Giving is practiced by many locals, who donate food to the processions of passing Buddhist Monks and Novices daily at 5am. By participating alongside members of the local community, we are showing our respect for Lao culture while raising much needed funds to make a difference in the lives of our enthusiastic students. This year, the challenge will be held from Monday 23rd May to Friday 27th May 2016. Please get involved!
