We raise vital funds to make MTW Hospitals an outstanding, patient friendly provider by providing additional equipment, services and amenities, above what the NHS can currently provide, improving the care received and health outcomes across the areas in which the Trust operates.

Story

Six years ago, our lives were changed forever. Thomas was born on the 2nd July 2019, via emergency c-section and for the next 6 weeks 6 days, fought with all his tiny being to survive.

Towards the end of her pregnancy, when Thomas’ mummy felt something was wrong, she went to the doctors, and through their rapid response to red flags on movement, she was transferred to Pembury hospital - where Thomas came into our lives 2 hours later.

From birth, Thomas was taken and cared for in NNU T Wells. After the initial couple of days of care, it became clear Thomas had Congenital Hyperinsulinism (CHI), rather than a milder transient form. On top of this, Thomas’ little body had other stresses and so he was transferred to GOSH.

In all honesty, his 13 days at NNU T Wells were a blur. However all the staff in the unit were amazing. Thomas’ needs were acute and unknown, but the staff did their very best. Their love for the babies entrusted to them was evident throughout and this is why we raise money for them as well as GOSH.

Thomas passed away at GOSH where the consultant called him a warrior. Never a truer sentence. He gave his all and so did those who tried to save him. The biggest compliment I can give to NNU is that on hearing we were expecting a little girl in 2020, Thomas’ mummy insisted on having the same lead nurse that cared for Thomas. This shows the level of trust she had for her unborn child, after the tragedy of losing Thomas. We, as a family, love NNU T Wells because of their love for him.
