We raise funds for research to help children & young people with cancer

Story

For Harry Styles' birthday (February 1st), we are raising funds to support the Cancer Research Kids & Teens organisations, to finally beat cancer.

Cancer is still the leading cause of death for young people under 25.
It takes the lives of around 550 children, teenagers and young adults each year in the UK. For young people that survive, treatments can be harsh and side-effects can have a devastating effect, some of which can last for the rest of their lives.

Throughout the past few years, Harry’s has been an incredible ambassador for the Cancer's cause, by
proudly lending his image to projects as Trekstock or Stand Up For Cancer, and thus helping reach the largest number of donations. He also contacted numerous kids and teenagers in this tough situation, via FaceTime or Skype, to cheer up them up and put a smile on their faceThis is the reason why I’ve chosen Cancer Research Kids & Teens, because I am 100% percent sure he would agree.

Every day around 11 young people in the UK are diagnosed with cancer. Despite improving survival rates, cancer is the leading cause of death in children, teenagers and young adults. Cancer Research UK Kids & Teens is a campaign to raise money for research into cancers affecting children, teens and young adults. With your help we will find cures and kinder treatments for young people facing cancer.

Although about 8 out of 10 children are now successfully treated, childhood cancer is still devastating for everyone concerned. Treatment can last for months, or even years, which means long stays in hospital and being away from the home, school, friends and siblings. School age children may fall behind. Even though children’s wards have teachers to keep the children's school work up to date, side effects from the cancer and its treatment often make children very tired. They may feel like not doing anything at times, except having a cuddle with mum or dad.

Cancer Research UK scientists have found evidence of increased withdrawal, anxiety and depression in childhood cancer survivors 9 months after diagnosis. They have been looking at how families cope when a child has cancer and what factors are important in making the child (and family) either more vulnerable or better able to cope with the cancer and its consequences.

ABOUT MONEY:

£20. The cost of running the Cancer Chat Forum for one hour, helping many parents and families through very difficult times.

£85. Pays for the time of an expert statistician for a day. With over 6 in 10 children on clinical trials, it’s essential we have these amazing minds to crunch through the numbers to uncover the best and kindest treatments.

£100. Buys a special chemical measuring tool that lets scientists find out the size of DNA molecules. These tools are being used by Professor Steven Cliford and his team in Newcastle, as they analyse the genetic signatures of children’s brain tumours and use them to predict the best treatments

£200. Buys a pipette, an essential item to make our paediatric scientists’ experiments accurate, giving the precise results needed to accelerate breakthroughs in the lab, and save the lives of more children.

£400. Is the amount it costs to run one of the recent clinical trials for a day, to find out if new drugs can help children with leukaemia whose cancer has stopped responding to chemotherapy, or has come back after treatment

£1800. The costs of the work of the Children’s Clinical Trials Team for one day, It’s only by running clinical trials that we can find better and kinder treatments for the brave children, teens and young adults with cancer, and keep more families together.

About the charity

Cancer in children & young people (aged 0–24) is different to cancer in adults – from the types of cancer, to the impact of treatment & the long-term side effects survivors often experience. Through research we’re determined to overcome some of the different challenges these cancers present.
