When I set myself the challenge of running a marathon (having never done anything more official than a parkrun before) and signed up to my local marathon with my Dad, I was determined to make it worthwhile by raising money for a local charity. 

The marathon route passes within a couple of miles of Barrow Farm Riding for the Disabled - a wonderful centre which provides the opportunity for both adults and children with disabilities to take part in horse riding and carriage driving. The charity is entirely self funded, relying on donors and an army of volunteers (including some of my own friends and family) to be able to continue offering their services. My target of £1250 will allow them provide 50 rides for those who would not be able to access horse riding elsewhere.

As many of you will know, I have had a love of horses from a young age. I am lucky enough to have been able to ride throughout my life and know first hand how much joy spending time with horses can bring. However the benefits of horse riding for those with disabilities extends far beyond just being able to try a new activity or spend time with these fantastic animals. There are many benefits, whether physical, mental or social - from improved coordination and balance to developing confidence and self esteem.
