Story

Im raising money for Motor Neurone Disease Association

My uncle unfortunately passed away with the disease and I've seen first hand the impact it had on not only him but also on the family as well.

It's so important to me to raise awareness and funds for such a worthy cause that I'll be running a gruelling 26.2 miles in Bournemouth, on October 2nd.

Your support and encouragement really means a lot and will motivate me at those times when I will inevitably feel like I won't have anything left to give. I have started training for it already but I definitely am not a natural runner so this will be a big challenge for me both physically and mentally.

I am currently following a marathon training plan and running 3-4 days a week.

Some facts and statistics on MND:

-MND is a fatal, rapidly progressing disease that affects the brain and spinal chord.

-MND attacks the nerves that control movement so muscles no longer work. It does not usually affect senses eg sound, sight, feeling.

-MND can leave people locked in a failing body, unable to move, talk, swallow and eventually breathe.

-It affects up to 5,000 adults in the U.K. at any one time and six people die each day from MND.

-A persons lifetime risk of developing MND is up to 1 in 300 (one person in an average size cinema screen.)

-At present, there is no cure.

-MND kills a third of people within a year and more than half within two years of diagnosis.

How the money raised will help:

£10 provides an info pack for a newly diagnosed person with MND

£50 funds lab equipment for a day of vital research into finding out the causes of MND

£200 provides a basic level of respite care for a day

£500 funds an iPad with communication software

£1000 buys a specialist joystick to enable someone to continue working

£1200 funds the installation of a stair lift and initial six months rental

£3200 buys a Lightwriter to give someone back the ability to communicate with their loved ones

If you arent in a position to donate, please feel free to share this post to raise awareness for the cause or offer me a word of encouragement :)

With your help MND association can vastly improve the situation of many people in great suffering and research causes to find a cure!
