I'm Harry, an 18 year old guitarist from Hampshire. In September, I am moving to London to study a jazz performance degree at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.
I have been accepted onto the prestigious Brubeck Summer Jazz Colony at the University of the Pacific in California this August.
I am one of three UK musicians to be offered a place on the course, and this will be an amazing opportunity for me to learn from some of the most respected jazz artists in the world alongside 24 extremely talented young musicians from the US, UK, and Australia.
I will need to raise money for return flights and course fees, which total £2650.
How did I get here?
I started playing guitar at 12 years old, falling in love with my Dad's Led Zeppelin and Jimi Hendrix records. By the time I was around 16 I started listening to jazz, and decided I wanted to pursue a career in music.
I have been lucky enough to have some incredible mentors and teachers during the past two years. Since January 2018 I have been taking regular private lessons with Mike Outram, who has had a significant impact on both my guitar playing and general musicianship. I have also been a member of the Julian Joseph Jazz Academy since last September, under the direct tutelage of Julian himself. This has again been transformative, and Julian's wealth of experience and knowledge is constantly inspiring.
In September I start at the Guildhall, and in the future I hope to be able to make and share as much music as possible, with as many people as possible.
The Brubeck Summer Jazz educational programme will help to expand my musical horizons, and provide me with skills that will strengthen my future career.
I am extremely fortunate to have this opportunity, and I will be working hard over the next few weeks to earn the required funds. Any help you are able to offer would be greatly appreciated, as I look forward to this once in a lifetime experience.
