In September 2018 my wonderful mother in law, Pamela died. Pamela was diagnosed with dementia in 2015.

There are various forms of dementia and they affect people in different ways and at different speeds. Something  I was ignorant of until it came knocking at our door.  

Every family will have a different experience and I can only give you mine.

Pamela was a bright, caring, beautiful, loving human being. She loved her family, her 4 grandchildren and her church. She was also a fantastic cake maker and kanny mathematician, which she taught until her health deteriorated too far. 

As the condition progressed she no longer remembered who we were, even though she tried so hard too. But despite all the challenges dementia presented to Pamela she always managed a smile.

I guess the best way I can describe it is that Dementia gradually turns out the light of the person you love and there's nothing that can be done to stop it. It is the cruellest of conditions and affects every part of your body.

I want to draw something positive from our experience, if that's possible. So I will be running Bristol half marathon in September 2021, subject to Covid restrictions to raise funds for the Alzheimer's society.  

Now, I am no runner, but if recent times have shown us anything it is that life we do not know what is around the corner and life is about challenges,  and what's a challenge if you don't move out your comfort zone every now and again. So, I'm going to have a  small amount of discomfort if it means that money is being raised for this worthy cause.
