Why?
In October 2022, Helen and Murray's brother Les Flanagan passed away after a brave battle with Multiple Myeloma. Sadly, Les' Myeloma was aggressive and did not respond to treatment.
This is not always the case with Myeloma. Treatment for myeloma can be very effective at controlling the disease, relieving its symptoms and complications, and prolonging life. Unfortunately, though, myeloma is currently an incurable (terminal) cancer.
Les was born in London Colney and made lifelong friends while growing up in the village. He started his career at Cory's Distribution and went on to own his own logistics company. While in hospital with Myeloma, he wrote a book to help young managers achieve all he had. He was a kind, funny and loving man who lived a healthy life until he discovered he had Myeloma. This absolutely floored him. He was unable to walk steadily and soon unable to walk at all.
Les was very keen for me to raise money for Multiple Myeloma as well as the hospital that took great care of him. This event will raise money for Myeloma UK and in the Autumn I will be taking on a challenge to raise money for Danetre Hospital which took such great care of him in the months he was a patient - keep your eyes peeled for this.
Denise (Bryan's wife, Stacey, Darren and Daisy's Mum) - lives with Myeloma. She receives treatment to control the cancer and currently lives with few complications thanks to the treatments. Myeloma is incurable and Denise will live with this relapsing-remitting cancer for the rest of her life (see info below).
We need to raise money for Myeloma and awareness about the disease. Here is some information. More can be found at: https://www.myeloma.org.uk/
What is Myeloma?
Myeloma is a relapsing-remitting cancer. This means there are periods when the myeloma is causing symptoms and/or complications and needs to be treated, followed by periods of remission or plateau where the myeloma does not cause symptoms and does not require treatment. Find out more about the treatment of myeloma.
The most common symptoms of myeloma include bone pain, recurring infection, kidney damage and fatigue.
