Story

My Challenge
My page is a general page for raising money for the Huntington's Disease Association. Those of you who have read my book, Hummingbird, may wish to make a donation towards helping those with HD and to help find a cure.

BUT, ALSO...

On 25th August 2014 I successfully completed a walking marathon, and the day before I did the #PieInTheFace4HD challenge.

In October 2013, I trekked for 4 days to Machu Picchu in Peru, climbing up to 13,776 feet and camping on the mountainside for 3 nights in low climate. This trek was a personal challenge for me, especially as I suffered so badly with altitude sickness on Kilimanjaro, but I knew that it was something I had to do for the people who are still suffering with this terrible disease and for their families. I paid all of my own expenses, so every penny donated goes to help to find a cure and support those families.

The year before I climbed Kilimanjaro for HD, I did my first trek on the Great Wall of China. These treks had different JustGiving pages and I raised thousands of pounds for the HDA through donations and events such as a charity ball, auction, raffle, barn dance etc.

I published my story, Hummingbird, in April 2013. It's available on Amazon and Kindle. I'm still taking donations, however small, so please feel free to make a contribution. It is very much appreciated by myself and by all those we are helping.

If you're in the UK you can also text a £5 donation -  text BIRD57 £5 to 70070.

My Story
When I was eight years old my father was diagnosed with Huntington's disease, a hereditary and degenerative disorder, for which there is no cure.

With a 50/50 risk of developing the illness myself, I grew up under a cloud of uncertainty and I was scared of what the future might bring.

After many years of struggling with my sadness, two of my brothers were tested positive for the disease. My brother Nigel decided that he didn’t want to live with the condition but did not want to die alone. My mother was charged with aiding and abetting his suicide.

Hummingbird Book

I recently wrote a book about my life entitled Hummingbird. Writing the book has brought me back into the HD community and I am looking at this disease with fresh eyes. The eyes of someone who is no longer scared for her own future, but is finding compassion and love for those who are still suffering. More then ever before am I understanding how many people are still crying out for hope and for a cure. I want to help as much as I can and I value your support.
